Specimen. The Babel Review of Translation

Specimen is an entirely multilingual web-magazine, which through translation gives voice to the multifaceted world. Texts can be in every language and alphabet, potentially translated into and from any other language. With a special inclination for second languages and hybrid forms, Specimen engages an ever-expanding network of writers, artists and thinkers, fostering relation and linguistic hospitality as the core of its approach.

Favouring a slow pace, Specimen publishes an average of two new texts and a number of new translations every month. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter, or rely on our Newsletter for a monthly recap.

Make sure you sign up to My Specimen to create your very own version of the magazine. You can store, bookmark, and highlight your favourite texts, as well as customize your reading experience by changing font size, background colour and texture. Click the info icon on the menu bar to learn more.

The editorial board and the writers involved in the magazine run a blog-like space, called Specimen Types: you can access it by clicking the icon at the right end of the menu bar.

At times Specimen returns to the physical world, in the form of limited editions or on-demand publications, as well as through public debates on the occasion of special events and festivals.

Specimen is supported by the Federal Office for Culture, Pro Helvetia, Dartmouth College, Fondazione UBS per la Cultura, Fondation Jan Michalski, and all those who contributed to its crowdfunding!

London As A Second Language
Humboldt books

cover_hu_babel_london2016_ISBN

“This collection is the first step toward a larger project, a travel book for the adopted city. That is what London is for millions of its inhabitants. These five short texts, written in Italian and translated into English, or written directly in English, approach London and leave London, then approach it again. Because London is permanent transit, transformation and tremor. London is a number of different realities next to one another: some interact and mix, most barely touch or acknowledge each other. London is multiple migrations, is extreme multiculturalism yet somehow monolingual, is savage finance and medieval guild, is brutalist and royalist, safe and uncertain; in this precise moment its mayor is Muslim and the air is damp and tropical. This book looks at London from the perspective of transition, which is one of the most constant elements for many Londoners who, like me, meet to create the London of today as much as they meet to contradict it. The photos for this collection were taken by novelist and film-maker Xiaolu Guo, as much a Londoner as I am. The translations are by a true Brit, Carla Calimani”.

Dorcy Rugamba, Marembo, translated by Daniela Marina Rossi

Viceversa Letteratura
