born in Rabat, Morocco in 1945, Abdelfattah Kilito is the author of several books in Arabic and in French, some of them translated into English, such as The Tongue of Adam, Thou Shalt Not Speak My Language, The Clash of Images, The Author and His Doubles: Essays on Classical Arabic Culture, Arabs and the Art of Storytelling: A Strange Familiarity. He has also written articles for magazines such as “Poétique” and “Studia Islamica”. Some of the awards Kilito has won are the Great Moroccan Award (1989), the Atlas Award (1996), the French Academy Award (le prix du Rayonnement de la langue française, 1996) and Sultan Al Owais Prize for Criticism and Literature Studies (2006).

Abdelfattah Kilito will talk with Luisa Orelli about the Xi century Epistle of Forgiveness by al-Ma’arri, a vivid, satirical, and theatrical narrative set in an afterlife filled with pedantic literary scholars, hypocrites, adulterers, poets, and a variety of sly dogs, hovering among unimaginable angels and virgins whose size changes according to the wishes of the Blessed.
