Babel 2017 – The Afterlife
September 14-17

Translation moves across literatures, literatures move across worlds. This year, Babel crosses over the ultimate boundary and welcomes writers who – from the world over and in different languages, with irony or with rage, cautious or in love – gave voice to the silent entourage, shed light on the shadows. Babel goes Afterlife.

With Yu Hua and Xiaolu Guo, Éric Chevillard, Marie NDiaye, Susana Moreira Marques, John Freeman and Franco Buffoni, Abdelfattah Kilito and Luisa Orelli, and Ugo Cornia, Daniele Benati and Viola Di Grado for Moby Dick, Rete Due.

Babel Books

London as a Second Language – Vanni Bianconi

“This collection is the first step toward a larger project, a travel book for the adopted city. That is what London is for millions of its inhabitants. These five short texts, written in Italian and translated into English, or written directly in English, approach London and leave London, then approach it again. Because London is permanent transit, transformation and tremor. London is a number of different realities next to one another: some interact and mix, most barely touch or acknowledge each other. London As A Second Language, Gotthard Super Express, Primi dispacci dai Caraibi and Dispacci dai Caraibi are the first four volumes of the series Babel+Humboldt.

Babel is a literature and translation festival, and every year there is a new guest language or nation. On Babel’s stage, authors engage in dialogue with their Italian translators, the people who took their work word by word into another language. The discussion is always preceded or followed by readings from the author in the original language and by the translator in Italian.

Among the authors Babel has invited so far are: Derek Walcott, Amitav Ghosh, Ismail Kadaré, Adam Zagajewski, Mourid Barghouthi, Elias Khoury, Guillermo Arriaga, Sandra Cisneros, Jamaica Kincaid, Ha Jin, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Ljudmila Ulitskaya, Ruben Gallego, Mikhail Aizenberg.
Babel also offers a programme of translations from different artistic languages with art exhibitions, films and concerts, as well as translation workshops, school visits, publications of new translations in books and magazines, events in other cities and countries, and more.
